On taking a very short drive out of Johannesburg into the Magaliesburg, I caught a glimpse of these Elephants and their keepers. I was amazed at how obedient the Elephants were and how they followed their keepers around. The sticks the men are carrying where not used on the Elephants. The elephants seemed very happy and well cared for.
I added this picture just because I thought the scenery was very pretty and I must admit I sat here staring at this for a while.

I have read about other parts of Africa where they do this with young traumatised elephants, eg those who have seen their mothers killed, but I didn’t know that they did it here, right on our doorstep! Wonderful post, Hope. Thank you.
Thank you, adee.

Some things have improved – there were never ellies at Magaliesburg when I was there.
I worked in that dorp at one stage …
First time for me seeing them there too 🙂

Cool pics Esperanza.
Have to say, in all the years I travelled through Magaliesburg, I never saw elephants next to the road 😉
Did see the gorgeous mountain though!!
These were in from the main road, took a little detour deeper in the place 🙂

How nice to see Elephants not in cages!
Yes, they are free and taken care off. It is nice to see 🙂

Have you read Elephant Whisperer? It’s a lovely story about a herd of wild elephants taken in by a preserve to save their lives.
I havn’t read it yet, but I do have it on my want to read list 🙂
