I have a policy of no religion and politics here on my blog but for today I am going to break my own rules in a small way because I cant help myself. I have a question?
The Catholics have a new Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio. I heard on the news report that Pope Francis has very strong views on contraception, which I understand to mean no contraception.
Please correct me if I’m wrong. I know there are other methods, but that is not good enough. Women should be allowed to use contraceptives. I understand that in some religions the only acceptable form of contraceptive is abstinence? Abstinence will only happen in a perfect world where women are respected. Women should be allowed to protect themselves…?
My mother was horrified when I made a doctor’s appointment to be put on the pill 3 months before I got married. She exclaimed: But the Pope…….
My reply was that she felt she had no choice at the time (no pills in those days) and how scared she was every time she missed her period. In her time (in Holland) a priest would come by the house to ask why no baby had been born during the course of the year.
To heck with what the clergy wants, I say.
I’m with you, Pussycat. Women should be allowed to have the choice.
*hugs*
I think it’s all about male dominance. Keep ‘em barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen… as the old saying goes.
Thanks Gunta.
*hugs*
I agree with you too, why should the pope tell us what to do. These things are easy for him to say, he is not in women’s shoes and does not understand women’s feelings.
Glad you agree, thanks Ute.
*hugs*
Not only the new Pope, but the whole catholic church is against contraception, but we’re living in another century, so I think also that we make our own choice to be protected or not
Yep, I understand that the whole church is against contraception but apparently the new pope has very strict views on this. Women can choose, but there are those who are locked into dominating mariages who feel they have to obey their husbands and the rules of their churches.
*hugs*
Yea, that’s to bad
Oi! Protestant Holland may have been bad but since the Catholic church only does as the bible insists why are you making such a big deal about it and scientifically speaking while mankind is mostly infertile it is a MIRACLE that we have children anyway and I for one am grateful that the church will be returning to a stricter policy when it comes to these matters as it could help with the growing epidemic of teenage pregnancies. People always tend to take this kind of thing out of context and then blow it out of proportion because we are perfectly happy calling ourselves Christians but not so happy following the laws that make it so.
- That, and I’m a married Catholic woman using the cycle method and still having the best sex of my life without feeling like my personal life is being infringed upon.
Just telling it like it is
Thank you for your comment. I call myself a believer rather than a Christian. You sound as though you have a good, healthy, well balanced marriage, but there are those women who are locked into marriages where they are completely dominated and have to obey their husbands and the rules and regulations of the church. I am not specifically talking about the Catholic church only…
*hugs*
Hi honey, that said it’s unfair you’d use a Catholic event to post a general comment such as this as domination isn’t what the Catholic church teaches … Catholic men are taught to love their wives as Christ loves the church … the other churches who believe in the ‘men are the head of the house schpeel and woman should be obedient have practically been raised that way by parents and their ‘preachers’ use the bible of ‘A’ church (which God really frowns upon) to enforce it … I really dislike people who look down on Catholics without knowing their facts … *hugs*
There are many world events which happen daily which cause one to stop and think. The event of the pope caused me to think about what I wrote about, hence me writing about it. I do try not to dislike people for having thier own views, I may not agree, but I certainly do not dislike them for it.
I don’t dislike them for having their opinions, I dislike them for voicing opinions when they are uninformed (peanut gallery style) and spread more untruths than is good for the world. I often have this same discussion with people who think their opinion is the truth without actually knowing all the facts … really gets me concerned because that is how rumours have babies who grows into fixed adults.
People are not as uninformed as you might think…
Here’s hoping …
Have faith
Could not agree with you more… it’s a matter of choice… woman’s choice…
Glad you agree and the first man to comment, thanks Bulldog.
*hugs*
I quite agree; my body, my choice. Women are people, not baby factories.
Exactly
*hugs*
I totally agree. Religion (in my humble and ignorant view) should be about love and acceptance.. including accepting decisions made by others.
Well said misselletea.
*hugs*
Personally I don’t have much respect for an institution that has incubated so much sexual abuse within its ranks ever since it was established, did its best to keep its followers ignorant of the true contents of the Bible and extorted huge amounts of money in the way of taxes from the poor. I don’t believe it’s history makes it a credible source of rulings on morality. As a Christian I don’t believe in abortion but contraception is essential in this modern age. We no longer live on the land with extended families to work it so controlling family size is the only way to avoid a life of poverty.
Thank you for your opinion, optie.
*hugs*
I may not be the first man to comment, but I do agree. I think that so many things done by the church are merely one interpretation of what the scriptures say and usually with a human twist to them.
That said, people are welcome to believe as they choose.
So it should be for contraceptive, too.
Scott
Thanks Scott, I value your opinion.

I’m pro choice! You won the tuffy competition on my blog. Please check your email as I need your details today!

Oh Hope – we can never change these fanatics – there will always be extremists. For the rest of us, I say it’s our choice in the end.. no one else’s business. xxx and hugs

There is a way to prevent pregnancy without using the contraceptive pill (which by the way is not good for our bodies). It requires the woman knowing her body and being able to see when she is fertile; and it requires the man showing respect and waiting for when she is not fertile. This form of family planning does work (I can attest to it) but it does mean that both people in the partnership need to work together and trust another. I am Catholic and yet believe that contraception should be the woman’s choice. BUT taking the pill is not the only way to prevent pregnancies.
I understand, thank you for your input, Colline
*hugs*
I used to know this large family when i was a school kid. They lived in a very nice addition and seemed to have so much. I asked my Mom one time why are they so lucky? Her answer was they are Catholic. they don’t believe in birth control so they have lots of kids and get to use the system . Now I want you to know these thoughts are not my views. they were my mother’s words
Interesting thoughts your mom had.
Thanks Terry.

I’m Catholic and I agree with you. I think it’s absurd that women should not be allowed to use contraceptives!! The times are changing.. people’s needs are changing. There’s absolutely no sense in sticking to old beliefs. I live in a 3rd world country where overpopulation and poverty is a major problem.. Being in the healthcare field, I’m fully aware of “natural family planning methods” which was my thesis in college. They work yes but the couple need to be knowledgeable on the hows and the whys. Unfortunately, a lot of women are uneducated about this specially those in the underprivileged sectors in the society. I think women should have the freedom to use both natural and artificial methods, whichever works best for them. I believe women have the right to make informed choices specially where their health and bodies are concerned. whew long comment.lol but really great post.
Thank you so much kz for contribution, it is greatly appreciated. Very well said.

And truths are about to be revealed that will floor the world. There are already arrest warrants for the pope, the queen and about 29 others for the deaths and child abuse in Canada by the catholic church and kept hidden and secret by the pope.
I believe that a woman should have a right to choose.
I believe so too, thank you Harold.
*hugs*
I think it’s all so strange, this belief that contraceptives are bad. I think it’s RESPONSIBLE. Think of how many woman have children before they’re ready. How is that fair to the child, let alone the woman? Sex is a passionate and emotionally deep connection to have with someone. Why should you be barred that experience because someone tells you it’s wrong?
I really don’t think it has anything to do with religion or politics. I think it’s an issue of power and how many people they can control. I mean if you really step back and look at it from a different prospective, it seems they are hiding behind religion as an excuse to tell you what to do with your own life. I’m very opinionated when it comes to things like this, which is why I typically don’t talk about it on my blog either. But I think you’ve got a valid point here. Forget about the fact that it’s “your body” but more that it’s “your life”! If you’re religious, you have a higher power you answer to. And that should be enough. No (wo)man is going to tell me what to do with my own life and how I conduct it. It shouldn’t matter if you’re male or female. You answer to your “God” (I put it in quotes as to not offend anyone, I know others have a higher power that may have another name or meaning and I try extremely hard to be respectful of everyone’s beliefs even if they differ from my own) and no one else. I refuse to be a follower of anyone else.
Good points you made there Rose, thank you so much.
*hugs*
With as much as the pope and other priests and cardinals have been in trouble lately who are they to trust. The only one that you should listen to is your heart and your own God spark within. “YOU” and you alone are responsible for yourself. Your were born “FREE” and your birthright is “FREEDOM” and “FREE WILL”. Not the will of others that are to be soon behind bars. Be the woman you were born to be…”FREE”!!!!
Very true and I agree thanks Jerry.

I support all women and their choice when it comes to contraception. I think it is strange that an organization that is so blatantly anti-woman has such world wide support. Insane. I love you all and your right to choose.
Thank you so much Jonathan, I appreciate your comment.

I cannot understand why they should allow the church to drift backwards. Abstinence does not make the heart grow fonder. In fact, in the case of their own number, it leads to perversions.
True that. Thanks Col.

I truly think…and I’ll probably catch a lot of flack for this comment…but: I feel like the Catholic church has been corrupt for a very long time. It goes back to a time when they left certain books out of the Bible, like the Book of Mary, or Thomas, etc., to control their sheep. They slaughtered thousands, ordered by Popes. They have fostered and hidden child molesters, moved them to allow them to continue on. These things will be Judged harshly! The last pope, the one who just retired…had a magnificent chair created, with an upside down cross in the back of it. He carried the staff with the bent Christ on it. And he proceeded to go around to other religions, like Muslims, Jews, etc., and taught them, that they didn’t need to believe in Yahshua (Jesus), only God. That goes against everything they’ve been teaching for hundreds of years. I think he was forced to retire, because of it. I also think, people forget about the PAST priests who IMPREGNATED VIRGINS on the solstice each year. Virgins who were obviously not married. these kinds of acts bring about scripture profficy that states the true whore on the hill will be destroyed! About your question, though, I don’t truly believe God approves of us messing up his design, I personally could never have an abortion, but to prevent the over population of our planet, and children giving birth to a child that will only suffer its entire life, I think God will understand birth control is necessary. There is clearly nothing wrong with a condom! I bought boxes of them for my sons….lol great discussion going hugger!! this is my bit to stir the pot!!! lol
Thank you for your contribution to this discussion, Shards. There is nothing wrong with contraception at all, in my opinion.

The white smoke(new pope) has no contribution so far to the genesis of black cloud( no contraception issue). As Wikipedia rightly mentioned-Prior to the 20th century, contraception was generally condemned by all the major branches of Christianity (the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism)[1] including the major reformers like Martin Luther and John Calvin.
My view regarding this issue is that woman has the God given right to choose as in Deuteronomy 30:19 NIV :-
This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.Using post coital pills ,is definitely killing a being, which has already born in the earth (uterus) and has the right to come out.
