Daily Prompt: Teachable Moment

Daily Prompt: You have to learn a new skill. Do you prefer to read about it, watch someone else do it, hear someone describe it, or try it yourself?

medium_6631650797

I do go on short courses to improve the work I do on occasion.  When I do so I would most definitely have read up on the subject first, if possible watched whatever YouTube has to offer on the subject before I actually go on the course.  When on that course I am an extremely hands on type of person, I have to do it myself in order to understand rather than just merely watching and listening.  Most of the stuff I do is usually more on the creative side.

I do expect the person teaching me to know more on the subject than I do and the same applies to me when someone wants me to teach them.  It is important to ascertain what level people are on and unfortunately this is often not done :(

*hugs*

  1. A commendable trait Esperanza. Know your subject before you attempt it…
i tend to ignore all teachings and follow my own. I’ll be happy as long as the instructor, or preferably the manual is next to me so I can refer to is there somewhere, but hands on is the only way for me to really learn anything. Get bored way too easily if I just sit and listen or read – slight ADD there I think ;-)

  2. I like to research before training as well. Unfortunately, I had an experience with that. I read the material provided prior to a training class on software and discovered I actually knew more, because I read the material, than the person leading the class.

  6. Learning can really be fun when there is motivation! I love that quote “if you are not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original”. Learning involves risks sometimes, but it’s always fun. Only the daring can reach some heights!

  7. It’s amazing how much value youtube and google adds these days.. :-) I can’t even imagine how it was without them earlier on as have become totally dependent on them for learning or reading something new. And you are so right in saying that the person teaching should have more knowledge or expertise..

  9. I love your last sentence. so many times students are thrust into a classroom, or maybe it is spouses or friends. we all learn at different levels and different speeds. it is not fair to treat us all as one. you learn as I do!

Tell it like it is ...
