Playing Truant

Victorian Children (14)

My little daughter is not too well at the moment and is off sick.  She does not like the meds, but has suddenly realised that the pain meds do work, so it has become a little easier. She does wish though, that they would make the antibiotics taste like custard.

But, my eldest reminded me of a certain time, many moons ago, when she was sick.  I remember the time she was referring to well.  Anyway, only recently did I hear more to what I knew about her being sick at that time.

She told me that she didn’t want to go to school that day, so she put the electric blanket on an lay on it until she was boiling hot.   Next thing to do on her mission was to develop some tears which she was able to do quite well.  So she came to me that morning telling me that she was not feeling well, all teary eyed and very warm.  I then, as she had foreseen, felt her head and thought that she was really burning up.  I then took the eldest to the doctor, the doctor examined her and found that she was really and truly ill with a chest infection!  Eldest said she nearly fell off her chair because she expected the doc to say he could find nothing wrong with her since she had orchestrated the whole thing :)

I just wonder how many times she used the electric blanket trick on me though… Its easy to laugh about these things years later but at the moment of it happening, it isn’t that funny :)

Anyway, eldest and I had a good old chuckle about it.  Did you ever pretend to be sick to get out of going to school?

*hugs*

  1. Reminds me of a time at high school during exams when a few of us had two days not writing so we went “stokkies draai” – no medical after that only straight to the principals office, six of the best and we were cured. By the way those of us still alive are plain normal people today.

  2. I “bunked” school once only as a teacher. I needed to make some important calls to a type of teacher ombudsman at the time so I pretended I had a cold.
My “cold” was better the next day and the problem was solved, too. Time well-spent at home.

  3. hehehe …. I did hey! But I could only get away with it once i was actually AT school. Being from England and on the pale side – I would go to the secretaries office and tell them that I wasn’t feeling too good …. they would look at this pale faced little girl and send me off home!! hahahahaa …….

  4. Loved your story hope the little one is back to health real soon. When I had a daycare, my mother in law used to work in the sick room with the babes who were ill rocking them all day if necessary till their parents came to pick them up. I often wondered how many of them faked just to get the extra TLC lol…

  5. Cute story and I do hope your little one gets better soon. Our whole family has had a horrible virus and my eldest daughter has been off school this week, for the first time in 7 years. She has never been ill before! She would agree with your daughter that she wishes the meds tasted more like custard – chocolate custard!
    Hugs!

  6. If I pretended that I wasn’t feeling well, my mom would tell me that I must just get ready and go to school anyway, and if I still felt unwell, I could come home again. She won every time, because once i got there, I forgot all about it. :D Hugs and have a great day.

  7. I was in boarding school all my life.. tough all boy schools.. you had to be half on your death bed before you got out of school… so no I never missed a day.. was sick, but never missed a day…

  8. One time I tried banging my head against the wall (of our mobile home–like my mom wouldn’t notice that noise) just to say I had a headache. Although I loved school, I think I had a physical abilities exam that day in gym class and that was my weakness! ;)

  9. I sure did! But only twice. And once it was because I didn’t complete my art homework. Haha. And when I was young my mum let me wash away the bitterness of my meds with fruit juice. If I had a small pill to swallow, she’ll slip it into a small slice of banana or candy so I wouldn’t taste it. But I guess the meds won’t be as effective as quickly that way…

  10. Hopefully your daughter gets better soon!

*smile* about the story of your elder daughter :)

Yes I did once – because I was afraid of a math test and I hadn’t learned enough before the test ..

In order to enter the attic of our very old house, we had to climb up steep wooden stairs..it was cramped up there, and there were wooden planks at the low ceiling – so I had the idea to pretend I had bumped my head against one of these planks when trying to get up there, and it would hurt badly now .. My parents believed me and provided written permission for my absence from school (it was always necessary for parents to excuse a pupil’s absence) – and so I could avoid the test ;)

Later on when I was 18, we were allowed to write our excuses for absence ourselves..and I admit that I used that possibility quite often.. I didn’t really like school..don’t know how I actually managed to get through until class 13 .. :)

  11. Never! Me? Perish the thought. Or, did I? Hmm… I guess my parents would know the answer to that question better than me. I don’t think I ever pretended to be sick, but as much as I dreaded school (especially junior high) I can’t remember faking being sick a single time. I think there were still things I looked forward to about being at school each day – getting out of the house, interacting with friends, playing sports, etc… If I stayed home I was relegated to my bedroom – no TV, no music, just sleeping and maybe reading if I was feeling well enough to be doing anything at all.

  12. My trick was getting hot under a blanket, then rubbing my tongue against my teeth to fool the thermometer.
(I hope your kid is’t reading all these suggestions!)

  13. Aww.. Hope your little one gets healthy soon. And OMG that’s quite a trick to not go to school. I’ve faked being unwell too.. But mine used to be mostly to put the thermometer in boiling milk just when mom would look the other way while checking my temperature with a thermometer.. Sadly, most of the times I did get caught.. :-)

  14. Oh yes! I was very good at faking asthma since I was truly asthmatic, so I could fake the attacks and wheezing if I wanted a day off school! I do love the honesty between you and your daughter though. I never fessed up to my Mom. :)
