My little daughter is not too well at the moment and is off sick. She does not like the meds, but has suddenly realised that the pain meds do work, so it has become a little easier. She does wish though, that they would make the antibiotics taste like custard.
But, my eldest reminded me of a certain time, many moons ago, when she was sick. I remember the time she was referring to well. Anyway, only recently did I hear more to what I knew about her being sick at that time.
She told me that she didn’t want to go to school that day, so she put the electric blanket on an lay on it until she was boiling hot. Next thing to do on her mission was to develop some tears which she was able to do quite well. So she came to me that morning telling me that she was not feeling well, all teary eyed and very warm. I then, as she had foreseen, felt her head and thought that she was really burning up. I then took the eldest to the doctor, the doctor examined her and found that she was really and truly ill with a chest infection! Eldest said she nearly fell off her chair because she expected the doc to say he could find nothing wrong with her since she had orchestrated the whole thing
I just wonder how many times she used the electric blanket trick on me though… Its easy to laugh about these things years later but at the moment of it happening, it isn’t that funny
Anyway, eldest and I had a good old chuckle about it. Did you ever pretend to be sick to get out of going to school?
*hugs*

Reminds me of a time at high school during exams when a few of us had two days not writing so we went “stokkies draai” – no medical after that only straight to the principals office, six of the best and we were cured. By the way those of us still alive are plain normal people today.
Oh I remember the “six of the best” well, Newsy. Us girls had to get the six on our hands with a ruler, but I do think the boys punishment was much worse.
*hugs*
My youngest did – regularly!!!
I never did – actually enjoyed school
I didn’t either, I was too scared of the old man, but unlike yourself, I didn’t like school.
*hugs*
I think I have to thank the Power that be for giving me the Dad He has. I’m sorry you had to go through that kind of crap Esperanza.
The good thing is that it is over and long past now…
Lot’s of times, but I was never as ingenuous as your daughter. LOL
That was a clever trick of hers
*hugs*
I “bunked” school once only as a teacher. I needed to make some important calls to a type of teacher ombudsman at the time so I pretended I had a cold.
My “cold” was better the next day and the problem was solved, too. Time well-spent at home.
Very good reason for bunking Pussycat.
*hugs*
hehehe …. I did hey! But I could only get away with it once i was actually AT school. Being from England and on the pale side – I would go to the secretaries office and tell them that I wasn’t feeling too good …. they would look at this pale faced little girl and send me off home!! hahahahaa …….
Hahahaha! Naughty you, Jan!
*hugs*
Loved your story hope the little one is back to health real soon. When I had a daycare, my mother in law used to work in the sick room with the babes who were ill rocking them all day if necessary till their parents came to pick them up. I often wondered how many of them faked just to get the extra TLC lol…
Aw, how sweet of your MIL, Tammy. I’m some of them must have faked it just for that extra attention.
*hugs*
Cute story and I do hope your little one gets better soon. Our whole family has had a horrible virus and my eldest daughter has been off school this week, for the first time in 7 years. She has never been ill before! She would agree with your daughter that she wishes the meds tasted more like custard – chocolate custard!
Hugs!
Hope your family gets well soon, Carolyn.
*hugs*
If I pretended that I wasn’t feeling well, my mom would tell me that I must just get ready and go to school anyway, and if I still felt unwell, I could come home again. She won every time, because once i got there, I forgot all about it.
Hugs and have a great day.
I did the same with my older girls when they got bigger, ad, but when they were still little I and still with little one I do check temperatures and so on
*hugs*
Here’s hoping your youngest gets better really quickly. Your eldest is funny
Guess we’ve all tried it at some point but I never quite went to those lengths
She is funny, but if I had have known then what she had done I dont know if I would have found it so funny
*hugs*
Hope the little one gets better soon! I’ve never pretended to be ill.
Thanks Tandy, she is one her way to betterness
*hugs*
I was in boarding school all my life.. tough all boy schools.. you had to be half on your death bed before you got out of school… so no I never missed a day.. was sick, but never missed a day…
The boarding schools used to be the toughest places to grow up in, dont know what they’re like now.
*hugs*
One time I tried banging my head against the wall (of our mobile home–like my mom wouldn’t notice that noise) just to say I had a headache. Although I loved school, I think I had a physical abilities exam that day in gym class and that was my weakness!
I really disliked the gym classes too. Did you manage to give yourself a headache though, Lorna?
*hugs*
No. I had little common sense and all that head banging probably knocked what little I had out of me!
ha! I absolutely pretended to be sick to have another day at finishing a project…. multiple times.
And I’m guessing you got away with it too
*hugs*
Yeppers! At least with my mom. At school, not always.
I sure did! But only twice. And once it was because I didn’t complete my art homework. Haha. And when I was young my mum let me wash away the bitterness of my meds with fruit juice. If I had a small pill to swallow, she’ll slip it into a small slice of banana or candy so I wouldn’t taste it. But I guess the meds won’t be as effective as quickly that way…
I think your mom was quite clever with the banana, I must remember that one
*hugs*
Yes, it’s a cool trick coz it’s a healthier choice than candy, still sweet and it slips right down your throat. =D
Hopefully your daughter gets better soon!
*smile* about the story of your elder daughter
Yes I did once – because I was afraid of a math test and I hadn’t learned enough before the test ..
In order to enter the attic of our very old house, we had to climb up steep wooden stairs..it was cramped up there, and there were wooden planks at the low ceiling – so I had the idea to pretend I had bumped my head against one of these planks when trying to get up there, and it would hurt badly now .. My parents believed me and provided written permission for my absence from school (it was always necessary for parents to excuse a pupil’s absence) – and so I could avoid the test
Later on when I was 18, we were allowed to write our excuses for absence ourselves..and I admit that I used that possibility quite often.. I didn’t really like school..don’t know how I actually managed to get through until class 13 ..
Clever idea that, Ocean. I’m with you about not liking school, I also don’t know how I managed getting through it.
*hugs*
Never! Me? Perish the thought. Or, did I? Hmm… I guess my parents would know the answer to that question better than me. I don’t think I ever pretended to be sick, but as much as I dreaded school (especially junior high) I can’t remember faking being sick a single time. I think there were still things I looked forward to about being at school each day – getting out of the house, interacting with friends, playing sports, etc… If I stayed home I was relegated to my bedroom – no TV, no music, just sleeping and maybe reading if I was feeling well enough to be doing anything at all.
Sounds like your parents know what they were doing, dj
*hugs*
My trick was getting hot under a blanket, then rubbing my tongue against my teeth to fool the thermometer.
(I hope your kid is’t reading all these suggestions!)
Clever trick El and I certainly hope they aren’t reading all these tricks
*hugs*
Aww.. Hope your little one gets healthy soon. And OMG that’s quite a trick to not go to school. I’ve faked being unwell too.. But mine used to be mostly to put the thermometer in boiling milk just when mom would look the other way while checking my temperature with a thermometer.. Sadly, most of the times I did get caught..
I agree that that is quite a trick, muZer. I never thought of putting a thermometer in milk either though
*hugs*
I managed to get through 12 years of school without taking a single sick day, it did t matter if I actually was sick! I think that makes me an overachiever
Well that is brilliant TA!
*hugs*
I never did but hats off to your eldest’s resourcefulness
Thanks Lena, she was resourceful at that young age
*hugs*
Oh yes! I was very good at faking asthma since I was truly asthmatic, so I could fake the attacks and wheezing if I wanted a day off school! I do love the honesty between you and your daughter though. I never fessed up to my Mom.
This same daughter who who told me this also has asthma…now you’re got me thinking, doran
*hugs*
I tried plenty of times. Mom usually didn’t buy it though.
Clever mom you have then, Glorious
*hugs*
She really is. Never ceases to amaze me

I had such a cool mom… she let me stay off on the odd occassion, without me having to pretend to be sick
That really is a cool mom Jackx
*hugs*
Hahaha, that’s such a cute story… and yes, I faked being ill… however, my mom is a clever lady and never believed me.
Have a lovely weekend Hope.
Clever mom you have there Kat. Lovely weekend to you too
*hugs*
Yes, I have. Hope your daughter gets well very soon.
Thank you.
*hugs*
I want an electric blanket!!! Well, I don’t think that works well in college…T.T
I somehow don’t think it will
*hugs*
I don’t remember ever doing that for two reasons:
1) I liked school
2) I was sick often enough as it was
Good that you liked school, Scott
If I was as genius as your daughter, I would, but unfortuantely I wasn’t
Hope your daughter is feeling better now
She is much better now thanks angel
*hugs*
Oh yes, great story though! I never went to that much work over it, she’s very determined.
She was, but fortunately my eldest is all grown up now, so no more monkey business
